I taught English for 3 years at Language Centre to students ranging from beginner to GP. I'm currently in the 3rd year of Polytechnic studying a challenging Biomedical Laboratory Technology course at NUH with a 3.0 GPA. Have previously studied Biochemistry/Neurobiology/Psychology in America and attained Junior standing, but was forced to take a leave of absence due to medical problems.
I prefer to teach by allowing my students to think about and discuss the problems instead of providing easy answers, which made me a very good GP teacher, according to my ex-student. I am not very good at drilling because I don't chase students for homework; I'll set it and if they don't do it that's their problem. What I'm good at is helping the student understand the concept behind things, which does not always translate to good grades. I am also very patient with students unless they are purposely being stubborn or rude.
In my own studies, I am much better at inference and 'thinking' questions than memorisation questions, which is often where students have problems. Singaporean students tend to be good at memorisation, and if they're not, tuition won't help them as everyone memorises differently. What I can do is help your child think through the question and answer it intelligently, which is a long term process, so results may not be seen immediately.
